In France, the Epiphany is usually celebrated on the 12th day after Xmas as the time the Wise Men or Magi arrived in Bethlehem to present gifts to the young Jesus. Since the 14th century it has been a tradition in France to bake and share a galette des rois. The cake is divided into the number of guests plus one extra portion. This extra portion , called “part du Bon Dieu” would go to the first pauper that would show up.
The galette des rois is made with an almond filling containing one “fève”. Going back to an old Roman tradition whoever gets the “fève” is made king or queen of the day. He/she receives a crown, ”une couronne” and chooses his king or queen. The other guests call out “Vive le Roi! Vive la Reine!” Nowadays, it is a custom for a child to go under the table and call out the name of the recipient of the portion.
A bientôt!
